Project synthesis
Project location: Democratic Republic of Congo
Main role: user research and service design
Length of project: 3 months
Project and facilitation languages: French, English, and Spanish
-
To develop a series of training guides for the project implementation based on a series of research insights on user’s ability and access to technology. Through understanding user’s language, cultural, and tech barriers the aim was to design a training modality for farmer’s and their COOPs to be able to effectively benefit from the Nespresso Traceability program and benefits.
User research focused on two main groups of people: female farmers and at-large COOP members.
-
During a period of 3 months we engaged in a collaboration with Open SC to work directly with their DRC (Democratic Republic of Congo) team to understand the way the training program for end users would be designed and implemented.
The project was done primarily in French working remotely with the field in DRC. Communication with team members from Nespresso and Open SC was led in English and Spanish due to nationalities involved.
-
User research to understand end user’s language, cultural and tech barriers. Insights led the design of the Training manual and overall program.
User research to understand the flow of implementation for effective understanding in the field. Insights led to the design of a comprehensive Service Blueprint of the entire experience, including touch points, assets, users’ actions, user flows, and expected outcomes.
Female farmer recruitment campaign design.
-
A training manual for field members to understand the effective implementation of the traceability program and ensure coffee farmer’s fair trade payment through the Nespresso initiative. Tech development led by Open SC.
Service Blueprint to visualize and map every phase of the program, every step of the way, and every action to take place. The Service Blueprint was designed as a living tool to keep everyone on the same page about the course of implementation of the project, making this tool available to low-tech collaborators in the field, as well as corporate stakeholders at Nespresso.
Female Farmer’s recruitment campaign. Due to low tech access, language barriers, and cultural dynamics female farmers would naturally be less inclined in participating in the traceability program even when they represented over 40% of the workforce. We designed a campaign to recruit female role model farmers who could take on a role of companion for those other female farmers who were hesitant to participate because of their cultural, language, or tech barriers.
